Carefree is one of the youngest planned communities in the state of Arizona. It was founded in the late 1950's by Tom Darlington and K.T. Palmer, and today is known for its fine homes, seclusion and views. The two men decided to create a community where life is "free of care." This is reflected in the street names; Ho and Hum and Easy Streets wind through the town. It is tucked in the bottom of the Arizona Desert Foothills, home to luxury resorts, fine residences and unique shopping. The town’s motto is "Home of Cowboys and Caviar, Where the Old West Meets the New."

Carefree's beginnings have the wild west flavor enjoyed by it's neighbor Cave Creek. The tough miners and ranchers shared a drink in many a saloon around the area. Today Carefree is host to quaint shops, fine dining establishments, and many area attractions. One of the most unique is the giant sundial located in the middle of town, the largest sundial in the western hemisphere. It stretches 62 feet and points to the North Star. K.T. Palmer, co-founder of Carefree, came up with an extravagant marketing plan to attract people to his new community. He hired the engineering skills of John I. Yellott, a solar energy expert. Together they created something beckoning, yet very resourceful. The dial not only keeps time but was once used to heat water that was pumped into the Palmer Darlington building in the plaza.

Carefree enjoys warm weather all year but is traditionly about 8 degrees cooler than Phoenix, located about 15 miles away. Outdoor activities are enjoyed year round. The spectacular desert scenery certainly makes you feel carefree!
